About the Piece

This was the first piece created by Chad when he took up his studio in Bologna in the summer of 2019. Like all the material for this project, there is a story for every box. The cardboard for this piece was derived from the boxes that were used to move from San Francisco to Bologna 2 years prior, and in many ways this piece represents the creation process of reusing the material of the past to create a new life. (Learn more about the philosophy of the material for this series.)

This is Chad's first three dimensional work and also the first time working with cardboard. One rough draft, which is still sitting in his studio, was started and then quickly abandoned after 2 days because the initial attempt exposed challenges with the material and initial methodology. In particular it was an enormous challenge to plan ahead with enough clarity and foresight so that as you lay down layers you reach the desired dimension and the correct form at the exact same moment, without distorting the desired shape.

This piece represents the second experiment, but the final form this sculpture would take was not actually known in the beginning, there were no drawings or plans, it was a very raw creative process. Chad began with the nose, and slowly added layers to construct the rest of the face, head, and eventually the shoulders and hair. It wasn't until well into the process that this particular concept emerged as an unconscious artistic expression of deeper feelings that Chad was processing at this time.
