About the Piece
This was the third piece created by Chad in this series, but unlike the others it was created in his home during the national Covid-19 lockdown (in Italy) in the spring of 2020. Like all the material for this project, every cardboard box has a story and a previous life—abandoned and given a second chance—the boxes for this sculpture were used to move from San Francisco to Italy three years previously (Learn more about the philosophy of the material for this series).
This piece is the only two dimensional sculpture in this series. It was created in a moment of profound crisis (global and personal), The original goal of this piece was to use the shapes of cardboard to paint with light and shadow, but the initial implementation was abandoned because it would require a much larger scale to accomplish Chad's full vision (which he still plans on doing at some point). Instead, this piece became a type of mosaic, where the lines of the design are created by the shadows between the cardboard, and texture is added to create monochromatic movement throughout the piece.
